VC2 Cello Duo
21st Century Cello
March 8, 2020, 7:30pm
Music from the 21st Century written by cellists, for cellists. The programme will focus on five works by Canadian cellist-composers commissioned by VC2, each inspired by one of the Beethoven Sonatas for Cello and Piano. These pieces were commissioned for the duo by their former teacher and Albertan cello virtuoso Shauna Rolston-Shaw. The five works will be contrasted with two newly commissioned works by esteemed Canadians Kelly-Marie Murphy and Vincent Ho as well as other cello centric works from at home and abroad that explore the vast sonic capabilities of the cello duo.

Pre-concert Sintonia Soundwalk
March 8, 2020, 5pm
SINTONIA, named for the Italian word meaning “in tune with” in both a sonic and figurative sense, was created by Valentina Bertolani and Aura Pon to bring accessible experiences that blend experimental music and mindfulness to diverse Calgary audiences. A core activity of Sintonia’s practice is the soundwalk, a walking meditation done with our attention attuned to the sounds surrounding us and within us, often hidden when our focus is elsewhere. In this second collaboration with New Works Calgary, Sintonia will lead soundwalkers through Inglewood, Calgary’s oldest neighborhood. Embracing the Bow and Elbow Rivers, railroad tracks, and a myriad of unique businesses, homes and green spaces, the area promises many hidden sonic gems to be uncovered through deep listening. Following some brief exercises to warm up our receptivity, we will embark from Festival Hall to explore the diverse sounds this vibrant, historic, pedestrian-oriented neighbourhood.
Soundwalks often provide people with the opportunity to take time out of their busy lives to bring their attention to listening, and they often become aware of new aspects of their every-day environment through this listening experience. It can be, for some, a very profound experience.
Join Aura Pon for a Soundwalk before the concert at 5:00 pm. Aura will lead a few deep listening exercises at Festival Hall to assist participants in warming-up and opening their ears, followed by a slow and easy sonic exploration of the Inglewood neighbourhood. The group will return to Festival Hall at the conclusion of the soundwalk for a brief discussion, allowing participants to share their experiences.
