Hailed by the Toronto Star as a “young musician with a bright future” and noted for his “spirited and fiery performances”, Rafael Hoekman is one of Canada’s most versatile artists, making his mark as a soloist, chamber musician, and orchestral player. A prizewinner at competitions, including the Montreal Symphony Competition, Quebec Symphony competition, Rafael was first prize winner of the Orford International Competition.
As a founding member of the Tokai String Quartet, Rafael was a prizewinner at the 2007 Banff International String Quartet Competition. As a chamber musician he has toured for Jeunesses Musicales and Debut Atlantic, performed in numerous festivals including Toronto Summer Music Festival, Elora Festival, Festival of the Sound, and Clear Lake Music Festival (where he played trios with James Ehnes!) He has performed as soloist with several orchestras, including I Musici de Montreal, the Quebec Symphony, Newfoundland Symphony, and the Calgary Philharmonic. Before joining the Calgary Philharmonic in 2011, Rafael held positions in Orchestra London Canada, Windsor Symphony Orchestra, Sinfonia Toronto, Winnipeg Symphony, and held a one year position with the Toronto Symphony Orchestra.
