Founded in 1997 by violinist Olga Ranzenhofer in hommage to artist Guido Molinari, (who, apart from lending his name to the Quartet, also designed its logo), the Molinari Quartet’s mandate is threefold: to perform and promote twentieth and twenty first century works written for the string quartet, encourage new creations by commissioning pieces from composers, and include, as often as possible, Canadian works in its program.

The Molinari Quartet presents two concerts series in Montreal: itsDialogues at the Chapelle at the Chapelle historique du Bon-Pasteur and its Twentieth and beyond concert series at diverse venues. Furthermore, the Molinari Quartet is frequently invited to perform in concert series and festivals across Quebec, Canada and abroad.

Through a varied and non traditionnal programming, the Quartet seeks to widen and renew the audience for 20th century chamber music. In collaboration with Guido Molinari, the Quartet has developped the very appreciated formula of the Dialogues which helps to bring together the artists, the musicians, the composers and the public through a real dialogue and in a unique setting. These Dialogues consist of two parts. Firstly, the Quartet presents, analyzes, comments and plays excerpts from its upcoming program of Twentieth and beyond series and has an open discussion with the public. The second part brings visual artists to expose their works and to talk about them. Once again the public is invited to discuss with the artists about their work, their interpretation, the choices that have been made, their technique, etc. For the participating public, these Dialogues are an extremely rich and stimulating source of interdisciplinary art. The object of these events is to demystify modern art by making the artists available to the public in informal and open-ended discussions and exchanges.

The Dialogues are held one week before the concerts of theTwentieth and beyond series and help the public to get acquainted to the works before the concert.
