Co-production with the Honens International Piano Competition’s Bison Noir Series
Bison Noir returns in 2016 with Schubert and the Haunting Destiny. The concert shines a spotlight on composers Franz Schubert and David Lang and our relationship with death and the hereafter. Mr Lang, a Pulitzer Prize-winning composer, dissected songs from Schubert’s final years and extracted verses in which death is personified and speaks to the living about the nature of its companionship. Inspired by Schubert’s Death and the Maiden, in which the text is divided in half; the first half is in the voice of a young girl, begging Death to pass her by, and the second half with Death’s calming answer, Mr Lang enlisted four classically trained artists busy in alternative-pop circles to perform the new five-part cycle of songs. “Art songs have been moving out of classical music in the last many years—indie rock seems to be the place where Schubert’s sensibilities now lie, a better match for direct storytelling and intimate emotionality,” he writes.
