Program:

Togni – Responsio

Special Guest:  Jeff Reilly, bass clarinet

Presented in partnership with the Calgary New Music Festival
Following the performance of selections of the work in January 2015, Luminous Voices presents “Responsio” by Canadian composer Peter-Anthony Togni. In “Responsio”, Togni reflects, comments, refutes, challenges and embellishes the bare medieval voice of Guillaume de Machaut and his medieval masterpiece the Messe de Nostre Dame. Juxtaposing bursts of bass clarinet improvisation against thorough composed choral material, Responsio casts the role of the bass clarinettist into that of a time traveller, bringing forward Machaut’s beautiful 14th creation into the heart of the 21st century.

The piece will be performed by Katie Partridge, soprano; Patricia Thompson, mezzo-soprano; Timothy Shantz, tenor; Oliver Munar, tenor; and Jeff Reilly bass clarinet.
